Problem / Solution Intro

Federal government, more specifically the DEA is in urgent need of policy reform. Since the Nixon administration the so-called "War on Drugs" has fought to limit, control, and ultimately shut down the illegal trade and trafficking of illegal narcotics and controlled substances. While I do understand and support this goal, I believe the DEA wastes time and tax-payers money on arresting non-violent offenders, an overwhelming majority of which are arrested for possession of marijuana intended for personal use. Arresting these peaceful offenders gets the DEA absolutely no closer to their goal. The early 20th century is a great example to study the effects of prohibition on the American people. During alcohol prohibition, citizens could no longer make or purchase alcohol in the USA, but of course, the people still wanted to drink. In less than a decade the prohibition movement created some of America's most famous criminals, who made money illegally making and selling alcohol to the public. This era saw America's record high of public drunkenness and other alcohol related arrests, even though it was made illegal.
